Stuart, I could not agree more.

Thanks Tim, I appreciate the affirmation. I am still, like many of us I guess, endeavoring to understand who we are in rapidly shifting technological and social contexts. How is this all changing your sense of self?

Good question. As much as possible, I strive to look to my own means for my sense of self, and certainly not a technology. I am so proud of our two sons, ever attentive to mom and dad, because I see that it’s not universal. I read of the inattentiveness of other relatives. It’s sad. It’s always existed among some people but now this easy tool comes along. Too many of us want to avoid the work of relationship and of care for each other. Relationships require work, thoughtfulness, thought itself, self-awareness, reflection, compromise, and sometimes even capitulation. Relationship is massively inconvenient even without automation. All our social systems and our democratic form of government require the workout of relationship: compromise, agreement, bargaining, capitulation, etc. I see it all accompanied by the growing disinterest in education — why bother when there’s Siri at hand? I have a friend who refers to ChatGPT as “him.” I see what’s happening, and I don’t know what wakes us up. Some great disaster, I fear.

Per that last sentence, I am endeavoring to maintain an optimistic outlook, grounded in pro-active engagement in the fullness of our humanity with and without AI.

Excellent! And I see that, even though it might not have been apparent from my reply. Thanks for getting back.
